Have your prescription information ready. If you live in Minnesota, the Insulin Safety Net Program provides a 30-day emergency supply for $35 at any participating pharmacy. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) under the 340B program also dispense insulin on a sliding scale.

Minnesota has the most robust program — the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act gives uninsured or underinsured residents a 30-day emergency supply for $35 and a longer-term continuing program for $50 per 90 days. Several other states have caps on insulin costs for insured patients (Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, New York, Virginia, Washington and others). Federal Medicare Part D now caps insulin at $35/month.

Try a 340B Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) clinic — they dispense insulin at deeply discounted prices on a sliding scale based on income. GoodRx and similar discount programs can also reduce the cash price significantly at major pharmacies. As a last resort, Walmart sells Novolin R, N, and 70/30 (ReliOn brand) over the counter for around $25 per vial in most US states without a prescription.
